Queen’s Christmas Speech

Merry Christmas Everyone

Christmas Break

The beginning of Hanukah seems as good a time as any to take a break, so I’m off until the new year.

Merry Christmas.

Downtime

Several days of solid writing and research have taken their toll.  Back on Sunday, possibly Saturday.

Bellicosity

Warbooks

My books are a bit on the bellicose side.

Reduced Output

Increased workload in the run-up to Christmas means that I will have to reduce my output and focus on my studies. Don’t expect anything particularly grand until mid-December. I’ll be keeping my Twitter feed updated so keep an eye on that.

The Seventh Day

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep,
though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

No Ifs, No Buts, Russell Brand Must Go

I’m not going to rehash the details of the story, but if you don’t already know it, find it here.

Obscenity, humour and taste are all rather tangential issues to this.  What is at the heart of the matter is that the behaviour of Brand and Ross was bullying.

Brand has past form on this, he has hoax called police hotlines and insulted the daughter of Rod Stewart.  It is now evident that this childish excuse for an entertainer is incapable of telling what is appropriate behaviour.

The BBC should also be having a long hard look at itself for broadcasting the episode despite Mr. Sachs’ plea for them not to do so.

Putting them in the stocks, which would be the equivalent of what they subjected the Sachs family to, would of course be unfair and a waste of fruit.  Nonetheless they deserve to be punished.  I will reserve judgement on Jonathan Ross, but Brand is a repeat offender.  He must be fired.

I’m still here

Apologies for not getting anything out this week.  A combination of religious commitments, illness and a draft post that got rather out of hand meant that I was unable to write as much as I intended.  Normal service will resume on Monday.

Party Conference

I will be attending the first two days of Party Conference.  I intend to attend as many fringe events as posisble, and hopefully do some broadcasting as well.  I’ll be taking my Blackberry so there should be some posting as well.

  • Quote of the Moment

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. — C. S. Lewis
