Irresponsible Non-Journalism

Following up from the last post, the chap from Don’t Panic appears to have a track record in non-journalism that mars some of his otherwise good journalism. In particular a short film he’s produced called “All White People are Warmongers“.

Notwithstanding the facile nature of the film (after all, is it really that unsurprising that western media focus their attention on conflict involving the west?), it also promotes a deeply irresponsible message. In particular, the attached blurb for the film:

If we’re going to start racially profiling anyone, how about we start with middle-aged white people. They seem to be the ones causing the majority of problems in the world.

It’s the first part of the sentence that springs to mind. If you check the Met’s campaign, all materials for which are listed conveniently on their website, you will see there is no listing of racial profiling. Which means that Mr. Prowse has either seen a racial issue where there isn’t one, or decided to twist the facts to fit a story regardless.

If he’d bothered to get out of his prejudiced comfort zone he’d know that racial profiling isn’t used by the Met, because it’s largely useless. If it were true, then perhaps he’d like to explain how Richard Reid, Nicky Reilly, Andrew Ibrahim and Sulaiman Keeler all ended up in court. Racial profiling isn’t used against al-Qaeda because al-Qaeda’s ideology isn’t racial. Unfortunately, the people who peddle the myth just make it harder to identify actual terrorists.
